Learning how to use contrast when decorating your home is one of the most simple and effective ways to create interest and beauty in your space. So, what is contrast? Contrast in home decor is when we put items together that are very different, or even opposite in color, shape, size, or texture. Our brains love contrast and find it interesting, and when done right, it can even be captivating and attractive.
Color
There are a few common types of contrast used in decorating. One of the most prevalent and easiest is color. If you think about common color combinations they often are contrasting - black and white, blue and yellow, pink and green. That is because colors opposite each other on the color wheel compliment each other. When using color contrast in design, you can choose one color as the dominant color and add a contrasting pop of color to accent. You can add pops of color with throw pillows, blankets, vases, and even wall art. When using this technique remember to stick to a color pattern, too many different contrasting colors causes confusion and is more distracting than interesting.
Texture
Another common type of contrast in home decor is texture. If you prefer no to have a lot of color in your home, you can keep it more neutral and still add contrast by playing with different textures. Woven baskets filled with soft cozy blankets, a beautifully patterned rug against a flat hardwood floor, or a smooth shiny vase overflowing with faux greenery are just a few examples of how texture can add beauty to your home. When adding texture, remember that our brains can process many different textures all at once. Unlike color, you don’t have to stick to one or two different textures, so go a little crazy with this one if you like!
Shape
Shape is another way we can add contrast in home decor. If your furniture is curvy and rounded, and your coffee table, vases, and lamps also fit the same theme, it can be a great contrast for the eyes to add something with a different shape. Our eyes like repeated shapes, but mixing it up adds interest. Try a large rectangular mirror in a room filled with rounded curvy shapes. If you have mostly straight, clean cut lines, a large circular wall clock can be alluring. By playing with shapes we allow the eyes to dance around the room and stop when they find something different and interesting.
As with everything in home decor, too much of a beautiful thing makes it less attractive. When playing with contrast keep in mind that every room in your home does not have to have all different types of contrast. Choose a few that stand out to you as beautiful. Play around with what you like and don’t like, and don’t be afraid to change up your decor often!
